There is a huge market out there for second-hand used Traktor Gear and what better way to save some money than to jump on the internet or look in the local paper for your next prized possession.
Be Careful
If you plan on buying some used hardware, be it an S4, X1 or any other kind of Native Instruments DJ hardware; you may see that the seller says they have the serial numbers and are going to include the software along with the licence. This is great, however there is something they need to do before you take your new piece of kit home.
Licence Transfers
Each time a product is licensed to a customer, the serial number is assigned to a specific email through the Service Centre. Before you are able to use your newly acquired software you must get the licence number transferred to you. This can only be done by the seller. You can ask the seller to contact the Native Instruments Registration support through this online form to have the serial number removed from his/her account.
Things to note
- EDU and NFR product versions cannot be resold. Therefore it is not possible to unlock serial numbers belonging to such products.
- If a product is removed from your user account, this will render all product upgrades based on this product invalid. Therefore the registration support will contact you before deleting a product from your user account in case this makes another product invalid.
If you have bought a used Traktor product and the original owner did not de-register their product, then Native Instruments recommends that the new owner simply buys a copy of Traktor online for $99 to get up and running.

Hi Al, just seen this article after purchasing on the Swiss equivalent ebay site an X1 Mk1, Z1 and an F1. I already have Traktor pro and an X1 MK2. I Sounds like they will work, I guess I still need to ask the seller to de register them? that is what it sounds like.
Good job I asked two of the units were registered he says he is going to unregister them. We shall see when they arrive.

I’m looking to buy a traktor f1, but the guy says he never even registered the product and he doesn’t have the serial key, I’m quite skeptical about purchasing it because he doesn’t know about the transfer of license.. Any advice?
If you’re already running Traktor Pro, it’s not a major issue. If you are running LE and buying the F1 upgrades you to Pro, then you should get the license number as the F1 comes with Pro. there’s a slip in the box with the number on it!
Hi, so i got screwed over on ebay buying a used until, couldn’t figure out why the unit wouldn’t work as I was trying to map it for months until i called tech support and they told me it was locked. now the only thing im waiting on the previous owner to answer their emails….. if the person eve sees it or checks email.. is thre a way to just buy a license?
I believe NI can unlock it for you, but as you say they might need approval from your ebay ‘friend’. You could potentially buy Traktor Pro or even a used traktor pro with a license. Or, you could by the Z1 right now as it comes with free Traktor Pro 2 until Jan 10th? I know it’s not the perfect solution.
I would maybe write back to NI and tell them what happened and see if they can unlock it without notice from the previous owner!?

Hey I have a similar question: I am buying a 2nd hand S4. The guy doesnt have the serial number etc but has told me he will drop the price so I can buy the software myself.
If I do this, download the software and try using it with a 2nd hand S4 – will it work??

yes, you can buy the software separately the S4 will work with even the free demo version of the software, then you can simply buy the license through NI service centre – this is around $90, so make sure you get that price off the S4 😉

I purchased a used s4 through Craigslist back in march. I was not aware of the serial transfer policy at the time. The seller gave me the software, and just gave me his NI account information. I found out about this policy about a week or so after the fact. Seller said he would furnish whatever needed /contact Native instruments so I could have it transfered to my account.
And of course the seller didn’t do as he said and has sinse changed his number and ignored all contact I tried to make.
So my question is, am I just shit out of luck getting this transferred to my own account?
Is there anything I can do? I’d really love to have this registered under my name…

Same here; just received an S2 i got used from Amazon and it came with the serial numbers but he never unregistered or transferred the license, and I knew something had to be up. Guy won’t answer my emails or phone calls. I just put in a request ticket using the online form above, but is there any chance they will transfer everything to me without the consent of the previous owner? Considering I now have the product and he charged me for the product and software, it shouldn’t belong to him anymore. It belongs to me.
Have you had a reply from NI? Maybe if you have a receipt that might help, although NI say the only people that can organise a transfer is the seller – http://www.native-instruments.com/en/support/knowledge-base/show/946/
