This week I decided to practice what I preach and played my hour set on DE Radio using manual beat-matching skills. I had not planned the set, I went into it with no clue of what I was going to play, I just went with the flow.
Set Up
I used a technics 1210 on my left and a CDJ900 on my right.
The turntable had Traktor Vinyl timecode controlling deck A and the CDJ was controlling deck B via Advanced HID Mode.
All were routed through the Kontrol S4 audio card, mixing internally. I routed this through the Pioneer DJM600 so I can add my XLR mic and send the record out back through the S4 to air it live on deradio.ca using Nicecast. The booth out was then routed to a second laptop, which was set up to stream live video/audio to Youtube.
Distractions and Glitches
You will hear a slight glitch in the first few minutes as the computers started to ‘think’ about something, but other than that there were no technical issues.
I did find that with so much going on, I was somewhat distracted from the music, which shows in one of my screwed up mixes. I guess this proves that it’s live and that mistakes can happen. Being my first manual beat-matching set in a long time, there’s bound to be a few imperfections. 😉
Hopefully the fact that I am willing to post imperfect mixes, will encourage you all to do the same. It’s a good way to learn, to get feedback and to critique your own mixes.
Live Streaming to YouTube and Google
When you watch the video recording, you can hear obvious artifacts and the quality of the audio is pretty bad. Even the music speeds up and slows down randomly! Despite it’s poor quality, I will leave it up for those wishing to hear how the streaming sounds, just incase you were thinking of doing this yourself.
My internet upload speed in Tofino is terrible, so I would guess that this was the cause of this awful quality.
Google also kept popping up a message to me saying that if I continued to play content that I was unauthorized to play, that they would cut me off. I continually dismissed the message, only for it to constantly pop back up. Despite this, I still made it through the hour without being cut off.
The Mix
For the full 2 hour set, including the guest mix from Patrick Deveraux listen or download the set from the soundcloud player:

You can also watch the unfortunately, poor quality, live stream recording on Youtube:
hey man check out mixify.com doesnt record video but audio/video quality is way better…
yeah, the soundcloud mix was taken from the nicecast recording whihc was the live stream – this worked fine. It’s the video that seemed to get ruined by the useless upload speed I have here (0.5Mbps)
